Groundscapes

February 5 - 29, 2016
Opening Reception:
Saturday, February 6, 6:00-8:00 PM

Artist's Statement:

Everyday I walk across the streets of New York and notice the urban markings and various surfaces and gravely textures of the urban floor. The streets are embedded with layers of materials, cracks, and patterns of use. I find visual inspiration in the way these elements interact but also I am drawn to the idea
of 'the ground' as a symbolic support, part of my relationship with something bigger than myself.
In my recent project Groundscapes, I used sandpaper to emboss wood and generated many relief prints to use as raw college material. As the prints are layered on top of drawings, traditional perspective becomes juxtaposed with textured shapes and spatial relationships are shifted and enlivened by the printed surface.

The Center for Contemporary Printmaking's Footprint International 2016

ABOUT THE COMPETITION:
The Center for Contemporary Printmaking's Footprint International 2016, is an opportunity for the presentation of current trends and innovations in contemporary printmaking within the bounds of the one square foot (12" x 12") configuration. The square format was uncommon in art until the advent of abstraction and presents distinct challenges of composition and expression. Within these precise limits, artists must confront a space and create visual order and formal structure.
JUROR
Andrew Stein Raftery is a printmaker specializing in narrative scenes of contemporary American life. He was elected to membership in the National Academy in 2009. Andrew is a professor of printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design.
